It's a new year and a new series. Welcome to "Links and Lores", covering the connection between the pioneer African Americans of Yuba, Sutter and Nevada counties.
Featuring a variety of vignettes, this series will be begin with the unusual spellings of the surname of a well-known scout, explorer and mountain man along with his strange encounter in Shasta County. Also included will be the curious street name which links Nevada and Yuba counties. Along the way, readers will meet Nevada County's Jennie Carter, an "unabashedly strong-minded" African-American journalist of the early West. Her husband Dennis Carter is equally unique as a well-known musician and political activist.
"Links and Lores" will reflect the friendships formed during the 1860s and 70s by members of the neighboring African-American communities. It will begin with "What's in a Name?" in a February edition.
