Critic's Corner - Annihilation

Starring: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson

Rated: R Runtime: 115 min

Some space rock slams into the Florida coast and unleashes a metaphysical prism that wreaks havoc with the local environment and to the alarm of the Government, it is growing. While somehow keeping the ever growing problem secret the government sends wave after wave of troops to investigate the phenomena. After one of the soldiers makes it home to his super smart biologist wife and falls ill. She is pulled into this ethereal conundrum and thinks and fights her way through to the end. Or did she?

The story is huge and opens many possibilities that are intriguing and impossible to cover in less than two hours. The characters seemed forced to fit in their roles as well as coerced to fill them. The cinematography is amazing. The creatures that fill the Shimmer are inventive and horrifying.

Annihilation, earns three out of five, Lighthouse Finding Monkeys. This story is too big and intricate to be told in just one movie. It would have made a good mini series but is not a strong enough story to carry a three movie deal. The visual effects and intriguing plot make it not a waste of money to see in theaters.
