Officer Involved Shooting Investigation – Update 4/10/18

UPDATE 3:00pm 4/10/18
The investigation into last week’s Officer Involved Shooting that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jonathan Alexander remains active and ongoing. The Yuba Sutter Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team led by the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. The team is comprised of investigators from the Sutter County and Yuba County DA’s Offices, Yuba City Police Department, and Sutter County Sheriff’s Department; with assistance from the California Department of Justice. A separate parallel administrative investigation is also being conducted within the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department and Marysville Police Department, to ensure that all department policies and procedures were followed thoroughly during the incident. Per standard personnel procedures, three Yuba County Deputies and One Marysville Police Officer have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Sheriff Canine “Glock” that was injured in last week’s shooting was released from the veterinary hospital over the weekend and is at home recovering. The preliminary investigation indicates that “Glock" was struck once in the neck by the suspect’s gunfire. We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery; but if and when he is able to return to duty is yet to be known.
An autopsy in Alexander’s death was conducted by a forensic pathologist with the Placer County Coroner’s Officer on Monday 4/9/18. Cause of death was listed as “Multiple Gunshot wounds”. Specific information such how many times he was shot, wound locations, and whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, remain pending a full and complete written autopsy and toxicology report from the forensic pathologist.
The investigation is in its early stages at this time, with continued interviews and processing of evidence underway. The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department remains committed to continuing to update the public with information as it becomes available.
