Yuba City, California Wednesday, August 15, 2018 is City Hall Selfie Day, and the City of Yuba City officials and staff hope it will turn a little social media into a lot of local citizen engagement.
Citizens have the chance to win (Best of) prizes by taking a selfie (individual or group) at City Hall on Wednesday, post it to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter with the hashtag #CityHallSelfie #YCCityHall #ELGL. Created by Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL), a municipal government support organization, the event is meant to provide increased civic participation.
"We want to encourage citizen engagement. We want people to know where City Hall is, where to come if they have a questions or want to attend a meeting, participate in the decision-making process, especially younger people who may not have been here before," said Mayor Preet Didbal. "We know it's kind of silly, but people are taking selfies anyway."
According to its website, ELGL created National City Hall Selfie Day in response to a tongue-in-cheek July 24, 2017 tweet that asked, "When is national cityhallselfie day?" This created an international annual event in its second year called #CityHallSelfie Day.
"Our goal is to get Yuba City’s name in the winners bracket for the 2018 #CityHallSelfie Day” said George Barlow, City of Yuba City’s #CityHallSelfie Day advocate.
This is an all day, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. event starting with coffee and donuts at City Hall for those early morning Selfie enthusiasts. The City will have a logo selfie backdrop and props stationed at the entry doors to City Hall. Feel free to use them, or create your own. Local Radio Stations will be conducting remote broadcasts from City Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) has best of categories for a chance to win various other premiums, including selfie sticks, mugs and T-shirts.
