Yuba County HHS employees raised $9,027 for the local Geweke Caring for Women Foundation, which financially supports Yuba-Sutter women battling cancer.
What started as a small potluck among a single unit 11 years ago has grown into a month-long fundraising effort celebrated with a large potluck lunch where employees win raffle prizes they donated. By the end of Pink October, HHS employees deliver a check to the Geweke Foundation. Last year, the department raised $8,888.
Over the course of October, employees of several divisions band together to pick a theme and put together elaborate baskets. Some local businesses donate items to the cause. Some items in this year’s baskets included Disneyland tickets, Def Leppard concert tickets at the Hard Rock Hotel, and an outdoor patio set.
The Geweke Caring for Women Foundation has helped over 370 women since 2006 with up to $2,000 in financial help including rent or mortgage payments, transportation costs, and utility bills. Read more about the foundation at: https://bit.ly/2qRb6OT.
Mary Ingles-- Eligibility Technician in the Eligibility - Operations Division-- is a founding member of HHS’ Pink October, and is herself an 18-year survivor of breast cancer. She said the fundraiser hits close to home not only to her, but to many employees who have been affected by cancer in some way.
“The happiest month of the year is October,” Ingles said.
