“Life is good.” If you were fortunate enough to know Gertrude “Gigi” Amelia Loften Stout, you heard her use that phrase many times. On May 20, 2017, at the age of 89, Gigi passed away quietly in Sacramento, California.
Gigi felt it was important for women to do something different in their lives every 10 years, and she certainly lived by that idea. She was born July 26, 1927 in Ocala, Florida, one of 8 children of Alfred Alexander Loften and Mary Leona Hester Loften. On February 25, 1945 she married John Raymond Stout and started a family, traveling from posting to posting as the wife of a military man. They had 6 children, each born in a different place. When her husband retired from military service in 1971, she found herself moving again, this time to Bossier City, Louisiana. When her youngest children entered high school, she began taking classes at Bossier Parish Community College; with the encouragement of her children, she transferred her credits to Louisiana State University, Shreveport and pursued her BA in sociology with a minor in psychology. She then went on to earn her MA in sociology from Louisiana Tech University, and had a rewarding career as a social worker for Louisiana State Mental Health Services. Her years working there and the friends she made were cherished memories for her.
In 2001, following the death of her husband of 56 years, Gigi returned to California where she enjoyed her family, new friendships, and more years of world travel. When she left us, she left us with the lessons of accepting your challenges, loving the people around you, and daily embracing faith in God and love of life. She never met a stranger.
Gigi is survived by her six children--Frances Rae (Don), John R. Stout, Jr. (Sharon), Carol Roseberry (Roy), Mark Stout (Ruth), Annette Kassis (Rich) and Laura Giglio (Mike); seven grandchildren--Brian Wright (Eliza), Christopher Bonelli, Matthew Bonelli, Michael Kassis (Kayla), Meredith Giglio, Celeste Giglio, and Story Giglio; three great-grandchildren--Maggie Wright, Liam Wright, and Sam Wright; and by her sister O’Bera Loften Brown and brother Raymond Loften. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers, her husband, John R. Stout, and cherished friend, Bernie Ryan.
Services will be held at Lambert Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd., Roseville, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Burial will be on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Hill Crest Cemetery in Haughton, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, those who knew and loved Gigi are invited to make a donation in her memory to the Christian disaster relief organization Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org).
